The Complete Street Institute is a comprehensive and standardized 5-module training program designed to increase awareness of complete street principles, support local advocacy efforts, and provide practical, realistic instructions and techniques to help communities create, adopt and implement Complete Streets Policies and Projects.

Our Task

The Greenway Collaborative worked with LSL Planning to develop five Complete Streets Training Modules and then presented the trainings through online webinars. The task included developing a program outline, compiling complete streets research and case studies, preparation of the modules and live presentations of the training webinars.

Michigan Complete Streets Institute Webinars

Webinar presentation of the Complete Street Modules from 2011 are available for download. Each webinar is an hour long and presents one of the five modules.

Module 1 - Overview of Complete Streets
This is the first of a five-part webinar series on Complete Streets brought to you by the Michigan Department of Community Health. This module will introduce what Complete Streets are, their origins, challenges, benefits, and what they look like in different contexts. The webinar will also provide an overview of how to balance transportation needs, recent national and state complete street policies and legislation, and how you can move your community towards Complete Streets. Presenters are Brad Strader, LSL Planning and Norm Cox, The Greenway Collaborative.

Module 2 - Stake Holder Engagement
This is the second of the five-part webinar series on Compete Streets brought to you by the Michigan Department of Community Health. This module will cover the impact of policy change, how to identify stakeholders, how to build and maintain a coalition, strategies to effect policy change, as well as examine lessons learned from Michigan case studies. The presenter is Nancy Krupiarz, Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance.

This module will explain what we mean by “policy,” provide the National Complete Streets Coalition recommended principles that should be in a policy and how to include them in a local policy, give an overview of the transportation planning process, and walk through sample language for Complete Streets policies. Presenters are Sherrin Hood, LSL Planning and Andrea Brown, Michigan Association of Planning.
